Graphic Tutorial #5

HOW TO MAKE THIS EFFECT (Overlapping gifs):

PS: I will not be explaining how to make a gif. I’ll assume that anyone who reads this tutorial knows how to make a basic gif.

PS #2: I use Adobe Photoshop cs5. I don’t know if other programs work the same and/or have the same tools.

STEP 1: We’re going to have two seperate gifs - which should both have the same number of layers. I’ve made mine 500x500 pixels, but if you want to make a gif-photoset, you can have smaller and multiple gifs. Sharpen and colour them however you want.

TIPS: I chose to colour one in black&white because I think it looks better that way. But it’s up to you. And make sure that the people/scenery etc… you’ll use will not overlap each other completely. You can use Image —> Canvas Size to adjust that.

STEP 2: Now we will be putting the frames and the colouring in one group. It’s the same as creating any regular group, just create an empty group-folder and drag the frames in. Or, if you know any shortcuts, you can do that as well.

STEP 3: Now, go to New —> New File and create an empty canvas of 500x500 pixels.

STEP 4: Go to the gif that you want to use as the “base,” which I’ve decided will be the coloured one. Open the animation bar and use Select All The Frames tool. (As shown below.)

STEP 5: Then, again from the animation bar, select Copy All Frames. (It’s just above the Select All The Frames option.)

STEP 6: Go to the empty canvas and select Paste Frames (from the animation bar, which we’ve used to Select and Copy the frames.) When it gives you options, click “Paste Over Selection.”

STEP 7: You may move your group on the canvas to adjust the gif. And fill any blanks you have left with a brush tool, but that’s all optional. I did that, because I think it looks better that way.

STEP 8: Copy all the frames of the other gif, and paste them on the canvas just like we did before. Move it around however you want.

STEP 9: Select the latest group of frames (the black&white one) and set it to lighten.

STEP 10: Use any text/decoration you want. I’ve used a sentence in between two simple lines. The font I’ve used is called Skinny and you can download it from HERE

And that’s it! :) I don’t think it’s particularly difficult. But if you need some clarification on any part, feel free to message me.

If you liked this tutorial and/or intend to try it, please “like” this post.
